Behavior intervention plans

When a behavior gets in the way of learning or safety, a plan helps everyone respond the same way.

How a plan is made

A behavior analyst first learns what the behavior does for your child, usually through a functional behavior assessment: watching when it happens and what comes before and after it, and asking you about it.

The plan then says:

  • what makes the behavior less likely, such as a change in a routine
  • the skill to teach in its place, such as asking for a break
  • how everyone responds when the behavior happens
  • how progress is measured

Practiced with you

The behavior analyst goes over the plan with you, practices it with you and your child’s team, and changes it when the data show it is needed.
