ABA therapy

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) uses the science of learning to teach skills that matter in your child’s everyday life.

What it is

In ABA therapy, a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) works one-to-one with your child, guided by a plan that a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) designs and supervises.

Goals are chosen with you and may include:

  • communicating wants and needs
  • daily living skills, like dressing, eating and toileting
  • playing and getting along with others
  • following routines and handling changes
  • learning in school and in groups

When a behavior gets in the way of learning or safety, the team looks for what it does for your child and teaches a better way to meet the same need.

What to expect

  1. Step 1: Sessions where your child learns best

At home, in the community, at school when allowed, or in a center, depending on your child’s plan and what your insurance covers.

  2. Step 2: Data every session

The team writes down what your child does in each session, so decisions come from what is working, not from guesses.

  3. Step 3: Regular reviews with you

The behavior analyst meets with you to look at progress and change the plan when it is needed.
